Science and medicine have made wonderful advances in the treatment
of cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society:
Early diagnosis and treatment have saved countless lives over the
past decade alone. In fact, the 5-year survival rate for localized
breast cancer has increased from 72% in the 1940s to 97% today.
Over the past 20 years, the survival rate for all stages combined
of prostate cancer has increased from 67% to 89%. Screening - accessible
cancers (breast, colon, rectum, cervix, prostate, testis, tongue,
mouth and skin) account for approximately half of all new cancer
cases. The 5-year relative survival rate for these cancers is about
80%. If all Americans participated in regular cancer screenings,
this rate could increase to more than 95%. But while survival rates
and expectations grow
so do the costs of new and advanced
treatments. Over $37 billion is spent each year to treat cancer.
